Breman Asikuma SHS Misses Out on NSMQ National Slot After Fierce Regional Contest
The journey to the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) came to a heartbreaking end for Breman Asikuma Senior High School (BASS) after a tough regional qualifier contest held at the University of Cape Coast.
BASS faced strong competition from Aggrey Memorial SHS, Mozano SHS, and Swedru School of Business in a four-round battle of wits, speed, and scientific knowledge.
The contest started on a promising note for BASS, ending Round One tied with Aggrey Memorial SHS at 18 points each, a sign of a potentially tight race. However, as the contest progressed, Aggrey Memorial gradually pulled away, establishing dominance in the subsequent rounds.
At the end of Round Two, BASS trailed Aggrey with a 10-point difference (Aggrey: 35, BASS: 25). Despite valiant efforts to regain momentum, the team from Breman Asikuma couldn’t close the gap. Round Three saw BASS at 34 points while Aggrey stretched further ahead to 50 points.
The final scores sealed the fate of the contest:
* Aggrey Memorial SHS – 54
* Breman Asikuma SHS – 34
* Swedru School of Business – 22
* Mozano SHS – 18
Though the results didn’t go in BASS’s favor, the team showed great promise, resilience, and dedication throughout their preparation and during the contest itself. Their earlier performances in trial contests had boosted hope and belief in a possible national qualification.
Speaking after the contest, a team representative expressed gratitude to the school's staff, old students, and fans for their unwavering support.
“It’s not the result we hoped for, but we gave it our all. We’ve learned a lot and we’ll come back stronger next year.”
As the curtain closes on this year’s NSMQ campaign for Breman Asikuma SHS, the focus now shifts to rebuilding and preparing for the next opportunity. With the determination shown by this year's squad, there's every reason to believe that BASS will bounce back stronger in 2026.
Better luck next time
