AGONA NYAKROM TRADITIONAL COUNCIL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Members of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Agonaman, Members of the Press Ladies and Gentlemen, we welcome you all to the Palace of the Omanhene of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area here at Agona Nyakrom. There is a pressing matter the Traditional Council wish to address concerning the Asona Family of Agona Abodom responsible for nominating the divisional chief for Agona Abodom, the Benkum Division of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area
The Agona Abodom Divisional Council led by Nana Owirow XIV, regent presented their divisional chief elect in the person of Opanyin Kwesi Gyan also known as Frank Asiedu to the President of the Traditional Council, Okofo Katakyi Nyarko Eku X and he was approved paving way for the legal customary processes to continue
A fourteen (14) day Notice of Installation was accordingly posted on the Notice Board of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council and all other relevant locations in Agona Abodom which is a legal requirement. Before the notice expired, a petition was filed against the Kingmakers and the chief elect at the Judicial Committee of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council. The Traditional Council then had no option than to halt all the installation processes until the final determination of the case.
The suit was discontinued on technical grounds on 27th September 2024, which a new Writ involving same parties was filed. Unfortunately, none of the defendants in the matter appeared before the committee to enable the plaintiffs to direct services at them. On 28th September 2024 it was at dawn that we heard rumors that the Asona family had paraded Opanin Kwesi Gyan on somebody's shoulders through the principal streets of Agona Abodom as the 'newly installed chief', without any recourse to the Traditional Council and Abodoman ignoring all the legal and customary procedures in the process. This unprecedented action taken by the Asona family of Agona Abodom prompted the Traditional Council to invite the heads of the Asona Family for questioning. One of the family heads by name Yaw Otoo together with the Queen mother and other family members appeared on behalf of the family. They immediately pointed at Nana Mprah Afful V. the Omankrado of Agona Nkum to plead with Agonaman on their behalf agreeing that they were wrong in the actions they had taken with regard to the Abodom Chieftaincy matter. They presented Schnapps, drinks and cash to pacify the Traditional Council and their plea was accepted. The Traditional Council reiterated that the appropriate customary procedures in the area were not followed and that there was no divisional Chief installed at Agona Abodom. The Traditional Council informed Nana Owirow XIV to continue his work as the regent of Agona Abodom until a divisional chief was installed.
There is a new writ pending at the Judicial Committee against the same persons which needs to be determined. On 15th March 2025. At the funeral of the late mother of the Omanhene of Nsaba Traditional Area attended by the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council, an announcement was made at the funeral grounds welcoming someone by name Nana Osam Dade Obrempong XI, chief of Agona Abodom. The Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council quickly refuted that claim and made it publicly known that the Benkum Division of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area had no Divisional chief by that name and that the announcement had to be disregarded.
A letter was later received by the Omanhene from the heads of the Asona family of Agona Abodom namely Ebusuapanyîn Kwesi Prah (Ebusuaysir), Ebusuapanyin Yaw Otoo (Gyase), and Ebusuapanyin Kofi Botchey (Obaatan) communicating their intention to dissociate themselves from the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council. The Traditional Council made no comment as to a family wishing to dissociate itself and not the Oman.
On 28th June 2025 the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council heard reports of a purported enstoolment at Agona Abodom involving the same person, Opanyin Kwesi Gyan carried in a palanquin proclaiming himself chief of Agona Abodom.
Our attention has been drawn to circulating videos telling reporters of a breakaway of the Asona family of Agona Abodom from the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area.
The Traditional Council has engaged several relevant institutions to bring the matter to a swift resolution but all efforts have proved futile.
In light of the above, the Traditional Council wishes to inform all and sundry that Opanin Kwesi Gyan aka Frank Asiedu is not a chief and has never been a chief and wishes to categorically state that he is an
The Traditional Council would advice itself on the appropriate steps to take in that regard. Any Chief who is found as an accomplice would be dealt with accordingly
We therefore urge all government and private Institutions not to engage this IMPOSTER claiming to be the chief of Agona Abodom or anybody claiming through him to be such. Anyone who does so does it at their own peril.
Again, there is no person installed as chief of Agona Abodom. The Traditional Council will communicate through this same medium when all issues before the Judicial Committee have been determined and a proper chief has been installed at Agona Abodom, not one who steps upon laws and customs and proclaim himself chief, setting a stinking precedence and tainting the beautiful image of the Chieftaincy Institution.
LAND GUARDS EMERGENCE IN THE AGONA NYAKROM TRADITIONAL AREA.
Thank You.
Long Live Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area
