A cloud of fear and uncertainty hangs over the Assin Anwiasu community in Ghana's Central Region, as teachers and healthcare workers threaten to leave the area following reports of alleged witchcraft activities involving some schoolchildren.
According to reports, several teachers have raised alarms about spiritual attacks supposedly being orchestrated by a group of students. These attacks, they claim, include mysterious illnesses, strange dreams, and even spiritual “accidents” that have left some educators fearful for their lives.
The tension intensified after a recent incident where two pupils reportedly assaulted a fellow student who claimed to be a "spiritual queen mother." According to witnesses, the girl allegedly summoned them before her “spiritual elders” and threatened them with mystical punishments.
“We are not safe anymore,” said one teacher, who chose to remain anonymous. “People are falling sick and having strange experiences. If nothing is done, most of us will leave.”
Health workers at the local clinic have echoed similar sentiments. Some say they’ve witnessed unexplained events and are also contemplating relocation. The School Management Committee (SMC) is deeply concerned. They warn that if the teachers and nurses leave, the school could shut down and the clinic would struggle to operate. This could severely affect education and healthcare delivery in the community.
Local leaders are calling for calm and are planning to meet with district authorities, the Ghana Education Service, and traditional heads to investigate the claims and restore confidence among public servants.
Whether the allegations are rooted in fear, superstition, or reality, one thing is clear: the future of education and healthcare in Assin Anwiasu hangs in the balance.
